Charles Vonder Embse

The name may make you "vonder" if he's a member of the royal family, but Dr. Charles Vonder Embse is a professor of mathematics education at Central Michigan University, and spends his days translating math into English, as opposed to drinking high tea. Since way back in the 80s, he has been a consultant for Texas Instruments working with graphing calculators, data collection devices, geometry tools and other cool gadgets that help make math class, well, exciting! As a matter of fact, he just finished a two-year tour of duty on his latest labor of love, the TI-Nspire product line. A textbook wizard, Dr. Vonder Embse was lead author of the Addison-Wesley Secondary Mathematics series and the Scott Foresman Middle School Mathematics series, as well as a slew of other professional articles and textbooks he's penned throughout his career. His passion for the use of graphing calculators and computers in and out of the classroom and in the professional development of teachers landed him the role as co-editor from 1996 through 1998 for the Technology Tips section of the Mathematics Teacher, the secondary school journal of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He even found the time to serve as a senior academic advisor and instructor for the Teachers Teaching with Technology (T³) International Professional Development Program and co-chaired the SAT 1 Mathematics Advisory Committee for the College Board. Suave and debonair, Dr. Vonder Embse is a frequent speaker at international, national, regional, and state conferences and institutes. He received a M.A. in Mathematics in 1984 and a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education in 1987 from The Ohio State University. Go Buckeyes!
